OVERVIEW

Prioritizing emotional safety for librarians is essential for creating a supportive, inclusive, and resilient library environment that benefits both staff and patrons alike. Emotional safety strengthens skills related to different aspects of a librarian’s work such as patron interactions and conflict resolution, and can enhance job satisfaction. Ideally, these skills support mental health, promote inclusivity, and help to maintain boundaries.

Studies indicate that feeling emotionally unsafe causes intense psychological distress. The implementation of principles of emotional safety is transforming workplaces, including libraries, by significantly impacting not only the productivity of employees but also their well-being. It requires an approach involving everyone in the team considering lines of action that are wholesome. These efforts support practices proposed by worldwide leading health organizations such as the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, and other relevant bodies.

In this masterclass, Garcia-Febo will take a deep dive into understanding emotional safety in the workplace and how to proactively strategize individual and organizational efforts to attain emotional safety in the workspaces. Securing a work environment where library workers feel safe, more engaged, and motivated is important for all, the library workers and the library.

This 60-minute training is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by Loida Garcia-Febo. A handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who participate.

OUTCOMES:

    • Attendees will gain an understanding of what emotional safety in the workplace is;
    • Attendees will become familiar with recognizing signs of emotional safety and lack thereof;
    • Attendees will learn about the impact of emotional safety on well-being and performance;
    • Attendees will learn strategies for promoting emotional safety;
    • Attendees will learn how to deal with emotional challenges including coping with stress and managing difficult interactions;
    • Attendees will learn the basics of self-care and work-life balance which are inherently linked to emotional safety;
    • Attendees will customize a basic plan to strengthen their emotional safety skills.

LOIDA GARCIA-FEBO

Loida Garcia-Febo is a Puerto Rican American librarian and International Library Consultant with 25 years of experience as an expert in library services to diverse populations and human rights. President of the American Library Association 2018-2019. Garcia-Febo is worldwide known for her passion about diversity, communities, sustainability, innovation and digital transformation, library workers, library advocacy, wellness for library workers, and new librarians about which she has taught in 44 countries. In her job, she helps libraries, companies and organizations strategize programs, services and strategies in areas related to these topics and many others. Garcia-Febo has a Bachelors in Business Education, Masters in Library and Information Sciences.

Garcia-Febo has a long history of service with library associations. Highlights include- At IFLA: Governing Board 2013-2017, Co-Founder of IFLA New Professionals, two-term Member/Expert resource person of the Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression Committee of IFLA (FAIFE), two-term member of the Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning Section of IFLA (CPDWL). Currently: CPDWL Advisor, Information Coordinator of the Management of Library Associations Section. Currently at ALA: Chair, IRC United Nations Subcommittee, Chair Public Awareness Committee. Recently at ALA: Chair, Status of Women in Librarianship and Chair, ALA United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Task Force developing a multi-year strategic plan for ALA. Born, raised, and educated in Puerto Rico, Garcia-Febo has advocated for libraries at the United Nations, the European Union Parliament, U.S. Congress, NY State Senate, NY City Hall, and on sidewalks and streets in various states in the U.S.

ANNOUNCING: The "Teaching and Learning with AI" Summit from the Learning Revolution

OVERVIEW:

Our first Learning Revolution summit on AI: "Teaching and Learning with AI," will be held online (and for free) on Thursday, June 27th, 2024, from 12:00 - 2:30 pm US-Pacific Time. 

What effects do generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, tools, and applications have on learning and teaching? What impacts will they have on our educational abilities and activities, collaboration and communication, literacy, student agency, and independent, informal, and lifelong learning? The Teaching and Learning with AI summit will consider these questions and more.

While AI technologies have many dramatic benefits, there are also challenges and concerns expressed by professionals, students, and educators about the impact of these new technologies on teaching and learning and the information ecosystem as a whole. Some are reasonably concerned about protecting privacy and confidentiality of students while using generative AI tools and ensuring equity and accessibility. Others worry about ethics, plagiarism, bias, misinformation, transparency, and the loss of critical thinking. And all in the learning professions are wondering how AI might allow or require changes in pedagogy and curricula.

Join us for this free virtual conference to learn how students, educators, and teachers of all types are utilizing generative artificial intelligence tools. Conversations and presentations in the conference will address the practical implications of these tools in the profession, and information on the call for non-commercial, practitioner-based proposals is below.

OPENING KEYNOTE PANEL & SPECIAL ORGANIZER

Reed Hepler is the Digital Initiatives Librarian for the College of Southern Idaho and an M.Ed. student at Idaho State University in the Instructional Design and Technology program. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, with emphases in Archives Management and Digital Curation, from Indiana University. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in History with minors in Anthropology and Religious Studies as well as a Museum Certificate. He has worked at nonprofits, corporations, and educational institutions encouraging information literacy and effective education. Combining all of these degrees and experiences, Reed strives to promote ethical librarianship and educational initiatives.

Proposals for 30-minute concurrent presentations are now being accepted. Proposals will be evaluated and accepted in the order received. The link to submit proposals is HERE. Proposals should be non-commercial and practitioner-based.
